چکیده

We report long, pointed ROSAT HRI observations of the hyperluminous galaxies IRAS F00235+1024, F12514+1027, F14481+4454 and F14537+1950. Two of them are optically classified as Seyfert-like. No X-ray sources are detected at the positions of any of the objects, with a mean upper limit LX/LBol ≃ 2.3 × 10 . This indicates that any active nuclei are either atypically weak at X-ray wavelengths or obscured by column densities NH > 10 23 cm . They differ markedly from ‘ordinary’ Seyfert 2 galaxies, bearing a closer resemblance in the soft X-ray band to composite Seyfert 2 galaxies or to some types of starburst.

XMM-Newton observations of two hyperluminous IRAS galaxies: Compton-thick quasars with obscuring starbursts

We present XMM-Newton observations of two hyperluminous IRAS galaxies (LBol > 10h 50 L⊙), neither of which was previously detected by ROSAT. Published models of the infrared spectral energy distributions imply that a starburst and obscured quasar contribute equally to the power of each source. IRAS F12514+1027 (z = 0.30) is detected in 18.6 ks with 130 EPIC-pn counts over 0.2-12 keV. The soft X...

X - rays from the Type II quasar in the hyperluminous infrared galaxy IRAS F 15307 + 3252

We report the detection of X-ray emission from the hyperluminous infrared galaxy IRAS F15307+3252 at z = 0.93 and its properties obtained from XMM-Newton observations. Although the X-ray emission is very faint and the data are noisy, a prominent line-like feature in the observed 3–4 keV range is inferred from both photometric and spectroscopic techniques. It indicates an X-ray spectrum dominate...

Hyperluminous Infrared Galaxies

39 galaxies are now known, from follow-up of faint IRAS sources and from submm observations of high redshift AGN, with far infrared luminosities> 1013L⊙. 13 of these, which have been found in 60 or 850 μm surveys, form an important unbiased sub-sample. 12 have been found by comparison of 60 μm surveys with quasar or radio-galaxy catalogues, or from infrared surveys with colour selection biased ...

Comparison of dust-to-gas ratios in luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies

The dust-to-gas ratios in three different samples of luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies are calculated by modelling their radio to soft X-ray spectral energy distributions (SED) using composite models which account for the photoionizing radiation from HII regions, starbursts, or AGNs, and for shocks. The models are limited to a set which broadly reproduces the mid-IR f...

ROSAT All-Sky Survey observations of IRAS galaxies; I. Soft X-ray and far-infrared properties

The 120,000 X-ray sources detected in the RASS II processing of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey are correlated with the 14,315 IRAS galaxies selected from the IRAS Point Source Catalogue: 372 IRAS galaxies show X-ray emission within a distance of 100 arcsec from the infrared position. By inspecting the structure of the Xray emission in overlays on optical images we quantify the likelihood that the X-r...
